Considering Abortion? Get the Facts First

If your pregnancy is unplanned and you’re thinking about abortion, you may feel like everything is happening at once. You could be facing pressure, uncertainty, or fear about what the future holds.

Many women also find themselves sorting through opinions from friends, family, or even social media. It can be difficult to know what information is accurate or trustworthy.

At Harbour Health, we provide free and confidential appointments where you can learn medically accurate information about abortion procedures, possible side effects, and potential risks. You do not have to have your mind made up before coming in. Our staff is here to help you slow down, gather facts, and understand your options.

Types of Abortion

Abortion ends a pregnancy either through drugs or a surgical procedure. The method used depends on how far along the pregnancy is and factors related to your health history.

Understanding the differences can help you feel more prepared and informed as you consider your decision.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

Medical abortion typically involves two drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to continue pregnancy. The second drug, misoprostol, causes uterine contractions and expels the pregnancy tissue.

This method is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks of gestation.

Cramping and vaginal bleeding will occur, which can range in severity. Other possible side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Fever or chills
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

Possible risks include:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Incomplete abortion (tissue remains, requiring follow-up care)
  • Ongoing pregnancy if the drugs do not work

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is performed in a clinic setting using suction and/or surgical instruments. Side effects include cramping and light bleeding or spotting that can last for several days.

Possible risks include:

  • Cervical injury
  • Infection
  • Uterine perforation
  • Scar tissue that may affect future fertility
  • Incomplete abortion requiring an additional procedure

Confirm Pregnancy Before You Decide

A pregnancy test alone cannot confirm key details, such as how far along you are or whether your pregnancy is progressing. A medical-grade pregnancy test and limited OB ultrasound can help provide this information and protect your health.
