Have You Confirmed Your Pregnancy?

You may think a late period and a positive pregnancy test are all you need to determine whether you’re pregnant, but they may not be. According to experts, possibly as many as 30% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage.

Because it takes time for a woman’s body to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, she could get a positive pregnancy test but no longer be pregnant. So, how do you determine if you’re actually pregnant?

Free and Confidential Pregnancy Confirmation

We suggest starting with free, confidential, medical-grade pregnancy testing at Harbour Health. If your test is positive, you may qualify for a free and confidential limited OB ultrasound. With another pregnancy test and an ultrasound, you’ll receive confirmation of pregnancy.

Ultrasound reveals how far along you are in your pregnancy, its location, and whether your pregnancy is viable (developing) or you’ve had a miscarriage. After getting this vital medical information, you can present your parents with the facts.

How Do I Approach My Parents?

By approaching your parents with information about your pregnancy and your options, you will show them you are handling the situation maturely. At Harbour Health, we can discuss all three of your options: having an abortion, placing for adoption, or choosing to parent.

Even with confirmation of your pregnancy and information about your options, speaking with your folks can be scary. We’ve got a few “do’s” and “don’ts” to help you.

What You Should Do

  • Do pick a time when your parents aren’t distracted. If possible, approach the subject when everyone is relaxed.
  • Start the conversation calmly with a phrase such as “I have some important information to share with you. I’m pregnant.”
  • Give your parents time to absorb the shock of the announcement.
  • If you are afraid to talk with them, ask your partner, a trusted sibling, or a friend to be with you.
  • Be willing to answer their questions.
  • Have a plan to present to them.

What You Should Not Do

  • Don’t get defensive. Keep the conversation from becoming an argument.
  • If their response is anger, don’t continue the conversation. Take a break.
  • Don’t let them determine how to handle your pregnancy. This is your decision and yours alone.
